Richard Prince: right or wrong

Is he right or is he wrong to use the images from Partick Cariou to reproduce new artworks. Personally I say no. He didn't have anything relevant to say short of using parody or sattire to try and denegrate a race of people. Who is he to say that he could negatively show these people in this way for his own profit. It wasn't as if he was trying to show them in a good light, improve their plight by exposing them to a greater audience. I find his arrogance appauling even after he was requested to cease and dismiss. Good on the courts for continuing to persue him.
Parody and Satire are tools which can be creative and useful, in this instance they tended to lend themselves too much to commercial and personal gain. As with all things there is a fine line drawn in the sand and at times that line can easily shift or be blurred.

William Kentridge - Eraser Drawing

I was introduced to this amazing South African artist William Kentridge who uses an erase and pencil drawings to create awesome animations. They are particularly regarding the political and social issues of his country in the 1990's but even if you aren't interested in the issues the artwork are worth the look in the first place. check out this youtube clip of his work.
During our life drawing class we attempted this drawing style. Here are a few of my eraser drawings. The idea is to work from dark to light, using black and white conte and devloping tones.

Remix-photomontage

I know very little about Remix though I do have an interest in Photo-montage which I see as both artistic and informative having a commentary regarding issues of interest. Above are some intriquing photomontages by Robert Rauschenberg and John Heartfeild.  The use of mulitple images being used to tell a different/new narrative allows the viewer to be drawn into the work and contemplate/consider what is the underlying meaning to the work. I value the use of collage and photomontage both analog and digital and how it can be used in creating new work.

Art history reading response assisgnment one, "The Gaze."

Here is my personal responses for the reading response based on Griselda Pollock's About Canons and Culture Wars" in Differencing the Canon: Feminist Desire and the Writing of Art's History  (London & New York: Routledge, 1999)

The response is comparing the works of Cabenal's, "Birth of Venus," and Manet's,  "Olympia."

Remix case studies

Lebbeus Woods chair does seem to have been re-mixed into the Bruce Will 12 Monkeys Movies. The court decided that there were enough similarities to have it edited from the film, Universal studios paid plenty for the previllage to keep the effects of the chair in the movie.

Keir Smith's, youtube clipKeir Smith v=S6eHcQhUH7Q is well worth a look and consideration. My opinion is based on Karma per say, what goes around comes around. The illegal activity with downloading is removing opportunities for the owners/artist to have credit finacially for what is theirs. If artist choose to place

 their work in open forums then that is their perogative.

Grid enlargement drawing

In this exercise we had to grid the picture from a national geographic magazine and then using a gridded sheet with squares twice as big we had to enlarge the picture one square at a time. An exercise in photo-realism. The trick was to take as much time focusing on each individual square to produce a highly detailed quality reproduction of the original. Check out the following youtube clip I found clearly showing this technique.

Mark making - Drawing exercise

A mark making exercise for drawing 1O1. An experimental sheet of mark making was done and then a minimum of 8 different marks to be used to create a form with no outlines etc. The idea being that the marks would build up the form of the subject.
